Breakfast – Current Kids’ Favourite

They definitely go through phases, but I’m not going to complain about this one – our favourite breakfast staple, smoothies.

Our ritual goes something like this:

I say, “who wants smoothies?”, and both boys run to get their little chairs.  They laboriously carry them over to the counter where the blender is stationed.  Then, Little D goes to the freezer and decides which of the frozen fruits he would like to include in today’s recipe.  We usually have a choice of mango, peaches, raspberries and blueberries.

This morning, they started with raspberries.   We almost always add banana because I like the texture it adds to the smoothie.  Then we add the milk and often yogurt.  Little D adds a scoop of “Greens+ Kids Powder Berrylicious”, and then Little C adds a teaspoon of shelled flax seeds.

I have, on occasion, added a little whey protein (less than a quarter scoop) to the smoothie if they have not eaten much protein the day or two beforehand.  Then, I add some water to the blender as well. (My boys probably only need 20g of protein or so per day and that whey protein is so concentrated so it’s important to be mindful of that.  I don’t want to overwork their little kidneys!).

Next, Little C starts the blender (under my careful supervision).  We wait, and then, on my instruction, Little D turns it up to the next setting.  We wait a few more seconds and Little C presses “stop”.

“It’s ready”, I exclaim.  They step off their chairs and run back to the table.  I pour the smoothie into the particular cups I know they like and I get them each a straw.  I find the straw is a key part of the smoothie experience.

I serve them up and they enjoy.

It should be noted, that they often accompany their smoothies with a little whole grain toast or a small bowl of cold cereal.

This morning, we went on to make a second batch, this time with peach and banana.

Breakfast Smoothie Recipe:

Serves 2 very hungry boys; all quantities are approximate and should be adjusted to taste

1 banana

3/4 c. frozen fruit of your choice (berries, mango chunks, peach slices)

1 c. milk

100 ml of yogurt

1 scoop of Greens+ Kids

1 tsp shelled or ground flax-seed

Blend, pour, serve with a straw, and watch the smiley faces sipping it down.
